Haringey praised for safeguarding leadership

Haringey has strengthened safeguarding services over the past 18 months, according to Ofsted inspectors.

In a report published today (25 February), the watchdog graded the overall effectiveness of the authority’s safeguarding services as "adequate" but said committed leadership and effective partnership working had contributed to improvements.

While inspectors said that by using social work assistants to carry out assessment the council was not meeting national guidance they also said that the council’s capacity to improve was "good".

The report states: "Highly visible and committed leadership within the partnership, including the safeguarding children board and children’s trust, has strengthened safeguarding provision and systems over the past 18 months.

"Effective partnership working between council children’s services, health services, the police, the voluntary sector and other agencies is helping to ensure the early identification and assessment of children and young people in need or who are at risk of harm."
