Half of young people skipping meals as cost of living increases, Centrepoint finds

Almost half of young people have been forced to go to bed hungry in the last 12 months as the cost of living soars, new research by youth homelessness charity Centrepoint finds.

It adds that 35 per cent of 16- to 25-year-olds have gone a whole day without food due to a lack of money.

Bills, rent and feeding their own children are the top reasons given by young people for skipping meals, a survey of 2,000 young people commissioned by the charity shows.

The lack of food is having a long term impact on a young people’s physical health, the survey reveals, noting that four in 10 young people who are receiving benefits or financial support from the government aren’t getting enough nutrients for a healthy lifestyle.
