Government urged to establish school intervention guidelines

Government should introduce protocols setting out how local authorities can intervene in failing or underperforming schools, the body representing council chief executives has said.

A report by the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (Solace) identifies a number of key areas where it believes joint local and national action will strengthen councils’ championing roles.

In addition to calling for clarity on councils' ability to intervene, Solace calls for government to explore the feasibility of establishing a system for organising and developing governing body clerks as “competent and recognised professional advisers” to promote good governance.
