Government scraps free swimming scheme and cultural offer

1 min read Youth Work
The government is to scrap the pilot cultural offer for young people and free swimming for under-16s, the Department for Culture, Media and Sports has announced.

The pilot cultural offer, known as Find Your Talent, provided young people with access to cultural and creative activities, and was supposed to run in 10 pathfinder areas until 2011. But the government is cutting it to save £2m.

Free swimming for under-16s and over-60s was part of the last government's 2012 Olympics legacy scheme to get more people involved with sport. Cutting it will save the government £5m.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he was forced to examine a number of schemes to determine whether they offered value for money in the current economic climate.

"This has involved some incredibly difficult decisions," he explained. "But the cultural and sporting worlds, like everyone else, urgently need the country's finances to be returned to a sustainable position."
