Government pledges to work with EU on 'youth experience' scheme

Youth sector representatives have welcomed a pledge by the UK and the EU to work on creating a scheme that could see young people able to work and travel freely in Europe again.

This includes the UK rejoining Erasmus+, according to the UK Research Office in Brussels, which reports on its website: "Outcome of the UK-EU Summit 2025: UK to rejoin Erasmus+".

The statement adds that the "UK and the European Commission should work towards the association of the UK to the EU Erasmus+ programme".

The British Council, the UK's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities said student mobility was "crucial" for skilling the workforce to engage globally. 

The charity's tradition of running exchanges, including for disadvantaged young people, was shaken with the UK's Brexit-related withdrawal from Erasmus+, which it ran jointly between 2014 and 2020, and the loss of its role in delivering the replacement Turing Scheme, in 2021.
