Government pledges to work with EU on 'youth experience scheme'

Youth sector representatives have welcomed a pledge by the UK and the EU to work on creating a scheme that could see young people able to work and travel freely in Europe again.

The British Council, the UK's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities said student mobility was "crucial" for skilling the workforce to engage globally. 

The charity's tradition of running exchanges, including for disadvantaged young people, was shaken with the UK's Brexit-related withdrawal from Erasmus, which it ran jointly between 2014 and 2020, and the loss of its role in delivering the replacement Turing Scheme, in 2021. 

Revealing its hopes for a youth mobility deal, the government said that the scheme would be “capped and time-limited” and would “mirror existing schemes the UK has with countries such as Australia and New Zealand”.
