Government on the hunt for councils to pilot SEN proposals

The government is seeking councils and primary care trusts (PCTs) to road test proposals outlined in its special educational needs (SEN) green paper.

Bids are being sought to test a joint education, health and care plan; a single assessment process; increased use of charities in SEN support; and personal budgets.

All were unveiled in the green paper Support and Aspiration: A New Approach to Special Educational Needs and Disability.

Partnerships between PCTs and councils in the same area, as well as partnerships that span more than one area are being considered.

In addition, the government is looking to hire organisations to support and evaluate the pilots.

The pilot project will run for 18 months and the closing date for applications is 15 August.

Laura Courtney, Every Disabled Child Matters campaign manager, hopes the pilots will look at the effect the proposals have on children and their families.
