Government confirms councils' duty to support domestic abuse victims

2 mins read Social Care
Councils will have a statutory duty to provide safe accommodation for victims of domestic abuse and their children from 2021, the government has confirmed.

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said every local authority in England will be required to support families fleeing their abusers in this way, under new laws coming into force through the Domestic Abuse Bill.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) said the duty would end the "postcode lottery" of support.

Ahead of the requirement, services will be given a £15m funding boost in 2020/21, which the department said is a 20 per cent increase on the current financial year.

Jenrick said: "This government is determined to pursue abusers, better protect victims and their children, and ensure they have the support they need - so we can end this abhorrent practice for good."
