Gove also said there should be more recognition that working-class parents had just as much ambition for their children as those from middle-class backgrounds. And he called for an expansion in the number of academies and free schools established in deprived inner-city communities, to give children from poorer families a better chance of a decent education.
He said: "The scandal of unequal opportunity in this country has to be addressed head on.
"We need to increase opportunities for the very poorest by making sure that we get the basics right. That means that the sort of educational opportunities currently available for the middle-classes should be spread more widely.
