Free sport recommended to cut childhood obesity

Councils should give schools that have limited access to playing fields free access to sports centres to tackle childhood obesity, a report has recommended.

The New Local Government Network calls for all councils to adopt an obesity strategy as part of their Local Area Agreement, and says they should be rewarded by being allowed to retain 50 per cent of the NHS savings.

The report also recommends that vending machines in schools sell only water and milk and that schools should explore ways to integrate physical activity into the curriculum.
