The economic boost would be through savings in future benefits as well as through increased tax revenues, generated through better health and employment opportunities. The catering industry would also benefit from a potential eligibility expansion to further add to the economy.

The research found that for every £1 invested, there would be a £1.71 return to the economy if free school meals were available to all children.

This would be achieved through £41.3bn in social, health and educational benefits for children. A further £58.2bn would be achieved through indirect benefits, such as expansion of the school food and catering industry and employment opportunities.
