The former MP, who became Lord Field of Birkenhead in 2020, was a prominent campaigner on children’s and anti-poverty issues during his parliamentary career.

His family announced he had passed away yesterday (23 April) after a long period of illness with cancer.

Anne Longfield, who was children’s commissioner for England for six years until 2021, described Field as “an inspirational campaigner”.

“He cared deeply about the blight of poverty and was relentless in his fight against. He knew kids have the best chance if they go to school ready,” she said, adding it was a “privilege to work with him”.

Meanwhile, food poverty charity Meals & More said Field was “a visionary and supporter of those in need”.
