Foster care: Blunkett steps in over teenagers forced out of care placements

1 min read
Evidence that 16-year-olds are being forced out of care before they're ready to leave placements has prompted former home secretary David Blunkett to raise the issue with ministers.

The Labour MP promised to intervene after he was told that a 16-year-oldgirl was being forced to leave her foster placement when neither she norher foster family wanted this. The Fostering Network is now gatheringevidence to show ministers that The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 isnot working.

Vicki Swain, policy and campaigns manager at the Fostering Network'said: "Fostered children are entitled to stay with a carer until theyare 18.

But the practice is to move them on at 16. Foster carers are told thechild has to move and the young people are told they have to move.

"A lot of foster carers are told that if they keep the young person theywon't be paid and that they are preventing a younger child from beingfostered."
