Wood, who joined Hackney Council in 2001 as director of education, has indicated that he will continue to work within the sector when he departs the local authority.
He said: “I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved at Hackney, where I’ve had the privilege to work with outstanding colleagues, who I’ve learned an enormous amount from.
"Our head teachers, teachers, school staff and governors have worked phenomenally hard to ensure Hackney’s children and young people have, year-on-year, attained higher and higher standards.
"I do not intend to go off into the sunset just yet, and whatever pursuit I might follow, I will always listen out for the continuing story of groundbreaking work in Hackney.”
Hackney Council said Wood's role will be subsumed into a new post covering children's services, adult services and community health.
When Wood joined Hackney the authority’s education service was judged to be the worst in the country. Since then he has overseen dramatic improvements and the borough’s schools are now ranked among the best state schools in the UK.
In recent years, he has been drafted in by the government to lead high-profile reviews into services in Doncaster, Birmingham and Tower Hamlets. He was president of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services in 2014/15.
