Fewer pupils are drinking, taking drugs and smoking

2 mins read Health
The number of school pupils drinking, taking drugs and smoking is in decline, according to a survey of almost 8,000 young people.

The proportion of pupils who reported having drunk alcohol at least once in their life dropped from 51 per cent in 2009 to 45 per cent in 2010. This continues a downward trend since 2003, when 61 per cent of pupils had tried alcohol.

In 2009, 22 per cent said they had taken drugs at some point, 15 per cent of which had taken drugs in the past year. But in 2010, that figure dropped to 18 per cent of pupils ever having taken drugs and 12 per cent in the past year.

This also continues a downhill trend since 2003, when 30 per cent of pupils reported having taken drugs. As in previous years, the most popular drug in 2010 was cannabis, taken by more than eight per cent of pupils.
