Expert group to overhaul adoption system

1 min read
The government has drafted in a group of adoption experts to overhaul the assessment process for prospective adopters.

The Consortium of Voluntary Adoption Agencies, British Association of Adoption and Fostering, Adoption UK and the Association of Directors of Children’s Services will work with adoption adviser Martin Narey to develop a more efficient adoption process to be introduced next year.

According to the government the current system is slow and unnecessarily bureaucratic, and can turn away prospective adopters if they are not the right ethnic match, are overweight or have smoked.

The expert group has been asked to improve the recruitment process for adopters and ensure those who do come forward are not lost in the system; streamline the training and assessment process; remove bureaucracy and provide set timescales for training and assessing the suitability of adopters.
