The chief executive of the British Association of Social Workers said: "I would welcome a general election being held very quickly to bring some certainty into this situation.
"Whoever is going to be the next children's minister or Children's Secretary, there's going to be this level of uncertainty for some time. I want to see children's issues and social work issues put at the forefront of the general election. We need to get on with it, rather than just having a government apparently on its last legs. We need really effective leadership."
Paul Ennals, chief executive of the National Children's Bureau, added: "If both Beverley Hughes and Ed Balls are gone by next week, it throws our sector into a period of uncertainty. We need incoming ministers to throw their commitment behind the policy agenda, which has won the support of the vast majority of the workforce.
"Now is not the time to come up with new initiatives and rebrands - we all need a period of continuity and commitment to the underlying principles, which have been serving us well."
