
Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast found that on 31 March 2011, 42,330 children were on the child protection register in England, up from 26,400 in 2006.
There was also a 46 per cent increase in the same period in Northern Ireland (from 1,639 to 2,401); a 33 per cent increase in Wales (from 2,165 to 2,880); and a 19 per cent increase in Scotland (from 2,157 to 2,401).
Publication of the research comes days after it emerged that care applications exceeded 10,000 for the first time in a single year in England.
Dr John Devaney from Queen’s school of sociology, social policy and social work, said: “Over the past five years there has been a substantial increase in the numbers of children referred to social services due to concerns for their well being.
