Research carried out by a senior lecturer of autism assessed 37 children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and 31 typically developing children when they were five- to six-years-old and again three years later.
Elizabeth Pellicano, senior lecturer of autism education at the Institute of Education in London, explored children’s theory of mind, their executive functions and coherence.
She found that, on the whole, children with ASD exhibited the same profile typically associated with ASD at the start and three years later. But a closer look at individual children’s patterns of performance showed that not all children with ASD displayed the same cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
