'The sector cannot take much more pressure," Neil Leitch told delegates at the Early Years Alliance annual conference on Thursday
'The sector cannot take much more pressure," Neil Leitch told delegates at the Early Years Alliance annual conference on Thursday

In a speech at the alliance's annual conference last night he said that moves to increase government-funded entitlements for working parents over the next two years as well as relax ratios, so staff have more children to support, will “pile even more pressure onto our sector”.

Leitch is particularly critical of North Somerset Conservative MP and former cabinet member Jacob Rees-Mogg, who responded to an EYA member and constituent over the relaxation of the staff-to-child ratios for two-year-olds in England, from 1:4 to 1:5 as of September this year and in line with current policy in Scotland.

According to Leitch, Mogg told the EYA member that “if somebody such as me is allowed to be left in charge of my own six children, it has always seemed surprising to me that people much more capable and better trained could look after only four. I am, therefore, glad that the number is being increased”.
