
Early years leaders had expected the Budget to include a childcare tax break for working families after childcare minister Elizabeth Truss suggested that the policy could be announced around the time of the Budget.
But reports in The Guardian and The Independent over the weekend said the tax break has either been cancelled or delayed because the government cannot afford the policy.
Neil Leitch, chief executive of the Pre-School Learning Alliance, said: "The great concern we have is that when David Cameron launched the Childcare Commission, we were led to believe it would do something for parents.
"But every policy coming forward is doing nothing to make childcare more affordable."
