Drop in youth custody due to co-ordinated work, says YJB

Recent reductions in youth custody levels are the result of a co-ordinated attempt to get local authorities and courts to focus on other measures, the head of the Youth Justice Board (YJB) has said.

There were 2,556 under-18s in custody in September this year, compared to 2,934 in September 2008, a fall of 12.9 per cent.

YJB chair Frances Done, speaking at the organisation's annual convention, said the fall has come on the back of concerted work by the YJB.

"We have been raising the profile of the issue with local authority leaders and the youth courts," she said.
