Some 299 children were subject to applications to deprive them of their liberty in April to June 2024 in England and Wales, rising to 371 children in the three months to September 2024.

Nuffield Family Justice Observatory (FJO), which monitors the figures, has also highlighted a sixfold disparity between applications for DoLs and secure accommodation in the three months to September.

FJO has described the figures as ongoing evidence of a "system in crisis".

While the MoJ has yet to publish full year figures for 2024 (960 applications to end of September), according to Nuffield FJO, the latest levels are comparable with 2023, when there were a total 1,368 applications.
