DfE to fund school character-building projects

1 min read Education Youth Work
Schools are being urged to bid for a share of a new £5m government fund designed to embed youth work principles within the classroom.

Local authorities, pupil referral units and community-based non-profit organisations are also invited to apply for grants from the Department for Education’s Character Awards.

Under the scheme, 27 grants of £15,000 will be made from the £5m Character Innovation Fund, announced by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan in December, to support school-based programmes that have been proven to help five- to 16-year-olds develop traits such as confidence, resilience and drive to achieve.

An additional grant of £20,000 will be awarded to the most outstanding of the 27 successful bidders.

To secure funding applicants must prove that their programmes, which could include community work, volunteering or sports, form part of a long-term approach to improving outcomes for children and young people.

They must also show that their character building initiatives have helped to support pupils’ academic achievements.

Launching the bidding process, Morgan said: “As well as high academic standards, this means providing opportunities for all young people to develop the character and resilience they need to succeed in modern Britain.

“The new Character Awards will help give schools and organisations the tools and support they need to ensure they develop well-rounded pupils to go on to an apprenticeship, university or the world of work.”

Applications for shares of the funding close on 30 January. The winning bids are due to be announced by the beginning of March.
