The grant will enable 500 schools already taking part in DfE’s Cadet Expansion Programme (CEP) to create additional places for children.

The funding will be given to schools directly to employ School Staff Instructors which will allow units to expand, the government has said.

Announcing the new funding, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said taking part in cadets will enable young people to “boost life skills, with a focus on resilience and leadership” following the Covid-19 pandemic.

He added that it “will widen extra-curricular activities available to disadvantaged children, as well as boost a culture of self-discipline in schools”.
