Ten local schools will be running the sessions, which have been developed by the gangs team at the Derby Community Safety Partnership. The multi-agency group includes police, the fire service and Derby Homes, and was formed last year in the aftermath of the gang-related shooting of 15-year-old Kadeem Blackwood in 2008.
The initiative follows presentations for nine- to 11-year-olds in 39 schools last year, which focused on the consequences of antisocial behaviour and alternative activities. It was subsequently decided that teachers and parents would benefit from the same information, according to police sergeant Ben Meakin, a member of the gangs team.
"Teachers were telling us that they didn’t know the names of gangs, the areas they operated in or their activities, so it became apparent that parents also needed to be informed," he said.
