Deactivated gun ban to boost gangs work

The Home Office is to ban deactivated guns as part of its efforts to tackle gang violence.

Guns that were deactivated before 1995, when stricter controls were introduced, can be reactivated. The police have raised concerns that such weapons are being used in crime.

Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, visited the Croxteth area of Merseyside yesterday to hear young people's concerns about gang related crime.

She said: "Tackling gun crime is key to making people feel safer and more secure in their communities."
