Daily roundup: Pelka protest, social worker jobs and child trafficking

Campaigners calling for justice for Daniel Pelka protest at council offices; "vilification" of social workers blamed for low job applications; and child trafficking experts to train African officials, all in the news today.

A group of campaigners from the Justice for Daniel Pelka Facebook group gathered outside Coventry City Council while a meeting was held to discuss the serious case review (SCR) into the four-year-old’s death. The Coventry Telegraph reports that around 30 protestors joined in the demonstration, which called for more action to be taken against the agencies involved in Daniel’s case. The group is petitioning for mandatory reporting of child abuse in schools.

Media coverage of SCRs and the “vilification” of social workers have been blamed for three senior roles in children’s services at Reading Council receiving just one application each. The Reading Post reports findings of a Freedom of Information request about recruitment at local authorities across the country. Council spokeswoman Anna Fowler said most local authorities are struggling with vacancy rates and credited high profile SCRs and frozen salaries as contributing factors.
