
A teenager hanged by a man obsessed with asphyxiating girls was failed by police and social services assigned to her killer after an earlier attack, a serious case review has found. The BBC reports that Jamie Reynolds, who murdered 17-year-old Georgia Williams in Telford in 2013, was in contact with the child and adolescent mental health service, the youth offending service and a scheme for adolescent sex offenders run by the NSPCC. Meanwhile Telford & Wrekin Council's children's services was aware of concerns about Reynolds and other possible victims.
A series of changes to the way support for children with special educational needs (SEN) is provided have resulted in a "fragmented" system, it has been claimed. The BBC reports that a study by charity Driver Youth Trust found that changes to school funding in 2012 and the introduction of education, health and care plans last year, has led to the system becoming "incredibly challenging" to navigate for children and their families.
Summer-born babies are more likely to be heavier at birth, and healthier overall. The Independent reports that researchers at Cambridge University concluded that this could be down to pregnant mothers getting more sunshine, but said further research is required.
A new service tackling anxiety, anger, isolation and depression among young people has launched across West Sussex. The West Sussex County Times reports that the Youth Emotional Support (Yes) service for 11- to 18-year-olds will work directly with young people to offer counselling and family support, as well as organising youth group programmes.
A range of techniques to reduce patient deaths will be trailed at Leicester children's hospital. The Leicester Mercury reports that the Situation Awareness for Everyone (Safe) programme, led by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, will encourage communication between clinical and non-clinical hospital staff.
