Councils wipe out one sixth of careers services

Almost one in six councils has closed or is planning to close its careers service as a result of cuts to local authority funding, a survey has revealed.

The study by the Institute of Career Guidance (ICG), due to be published next week, questioned 340 of the organisation’s members.

It found that a quarter of respondents had either been made redundant or been issued with a redundancy notice, while half said their employer had made redundancies or issued "at risk" notices.

Every respondent had doubts that their local authority would be able to offer a fully comprehensive careers information advice and guidance (IAG) service to all young people aged 14 to 19 in the future.

One in six said their employer is planning to replace face-to-face guidance with an online service. The ICG believes many others will follow this route.
