Councils urged to review SEND support to help schools be more inclusive

3 mins read Education
Councils should review how well they are supporting schools to be inclusive of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), a report urges.

The call is among a number of recommendations from the organisation London Councils in Inclusive Practice - The role of Mainstream Schools and Local Authorities in Supporting Children with SEND, published this week.

The research carried out with local authorities found significant variation in levels of inclusivity in mainstream education.

London Councils' report found that schools can be held back from promoting inclusion due to funding pressures, lack of SEND expertise and concern about impact on performance.

With the capital in line for a share of the £700m cash injection into the high needs block recently announced by the government, the organisation urges councils to consider how best to target the investment towards inclusivity.
