Councils urge DfE to address ‘major’ safeguarding concerns in out-of-school settings

The report contains several proposals to improve child safety in the settings including youth clubs, sports and leisure facilities, and tuition groups.

The LGA is urging DfE to introduce powers for councils to regulate out-of-school settings in order to improve safeguarding.

According to the LGA, this echoes long-standing calls for councils to be given greater oversight and enforcement powers for out-of-school provision.

The LGA has also called on the government to implement measures to enable councils to monitor and act on safety concerns based on the report’s recommendation which suggest that local authorities should be granted access to settings for the purpose of safety inspections, with the power to close those that are “unwilling or unable to address concerns”.
