Councils told how to improve media relations

Social Care
Councils are to learn about improving relations with journalists in a bid to raise the profile of social workers, thanks to new Local Government Association (LGA) guidance.

The Giving Social Work a Voice publication, launched at an event attended by directors of children's services, lead members and journalists, provides local authorities with advice on dealing with the media.

It suggests that councils build relationships with individual reporters, so that they are more likely to run positive stories about social work best practice.

It also proposes that local authorities put forward social workers to talk to the press, to communicate what it's really like to work in the sector.

The Social Work Taskforce recommended that there should be a programme to promote greater public understanding of social work.

The taskforce is supporting the LGA's guidance as part of this work.
