Documents published by Luton and Oxfordshire councils show planned cuts to children’s services in a bid to plug gaps caused by extra spending on the crisis.

A review detailing revisions to Oxfordshire’s 2020/21 budget by the performance scrutiny committee highlights temporary “new savings” of £3.7m.

The documents also reveal that the council’s children’s services department spent more than £1.7m on “Covid expenditure”. Overall it is reporting additional costs and lost income of approximately £51m as a result of coronavirus.

The cabinet will be asked to approve around £15m of savings for 2020/21 to cover the majority of this shortfall, a council statement said.
