Councils predict sharp fall in early years spending

1 min read Financial management Funding
Local authority Sure Start spending is to take the brunt of funding cuts in children's services this year, new government statistics show.

Latest projected figures from the Department for Education show that the gross spend on children’s services will come to £8.35bn for the current financial year 2013/14, compared to £8.58bn in 2012/13, a drop of £233m.

The cut represents a 2.73 per cent fall in funding, before the effect of inflation is taken into account.

However, total funding for children’s centres and early years services showed the biggest decrease – down £190m from £1.28bn in 2012/13 to £1.09bn in 2013/14, representing a drop of 14.8 per cent.

Other sectors to be hit by the spending downturn include youth justice, which is projected to see funding fall around five per cent, from £336m in 2012/13 to £319m in 2013/14.

Despite the overall drop in funding, areas that feature high on the list of government priorities have seen resources increase.
