Councils help parents track children online

1 min read Social Care
Birmingham City Council is one of three local authorities that will mark Safer Internet Day today by offering parents free software to monitor their children's online activity.

The council - along with Telford & Wrekin Council and Warwickshire County Council - will supply CyberSentinel, which logs websites and chat sessions, to parents as part of the European Commission-funded initiative.

The software, which is provided by Forensic Software, monitors computers used by children in order to find specific keywords, numeric information such as mobile phone numbers, and names of people.

It also records "prohibitive content such as pornographic websites, predatory conversations or inappropriate data or documents".

Telford & Wrekin Council will also install the software in the borough's schools and libraries.

Councillor Stephen Burrell, cabinet member for children and young people at Telford & Wrekin, said: "The safety and security of children on the internet is one of the major challenges of being a parent in the modern age and this software empowers parents with a new level of ability to protect them."
