Councils get guidance on reducing child obesity

Local authorities should involve children and young people who do not do enough exercise in the design, planning and delivery of local physical activity opportunities, according to new guidance.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued guidance on active play and sport for all children and young people up to the age of 18 in family, pre-school, school and community settings, in a bid to help local authorities meet their targets to promote physical activity and reduce obesity among children and young people..

Professor Mike Kelly, public health excellence centre director, NICE believes that the guidance will provide key support to authorities at a time when obesity figures among children and young people are "rocketing". Kelly says that although the guidance is for everyone working with children and young people, it must be implemented from the top.
