Councils fear Afghan refugees face homelessness amid housing shortage

Around 8,000 Afghan asylum seekers in temporary accommodation are at risk of becoming homeless due to housing shortages and long waiting lists, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

Afghan individuals and families, who are currently being housed at 59 temporary hotels across the country, have been served notice by the Home Office to leave by the end of August and given details of available housing support.

At the LGA’s annual conference today (July 4), councils will warn that these families are at risk of homelessness as the deadline to leave their hotels approaches, due to an acute housing shortage and long waiting lists.

In a statement, the LGA said that combined pressures from the government’s various asylum and resettlement schemes are leading to “unsustainable pressures” on housing, homelessness and children’s services teams.
