
Research by Action for Children found that although 75 per cent of 212 local authorities that responded to a Freedom of Information request by the charity were able to say how many children in total are affected by the cap, just 10 per cent were able to give the figure for children “in need” – those deemed at risk of harm or neglect.
It is also unclear how many families have been forced to move as a result of the controversial measure, which caps at £500 the weekly household income from benefits, although government figures show that numbers of families being placed in temporary accommodation outside their home area has doubled from 5,880 to 11,650 since 2010.
