Councils call for more powers to monitor home-education arrangements

3 mins read Education
Government plans to increase scrutiny of home education, including the creation of local registers of home-schooled children, do not go far enough, council chiefs have warned.

The Local Government Association (LGA) said proposals in the Department for Education's Not in School consultation document are insufficient to protect children and ensure they get a high-quality education.

The government consultation included several proposals including placing a duty on local authorities to create and maintain a register of home-educated children, and to provide support to home educating families if it is requested.

But in its consultation response, the LGA calls on the DfE to rethink the proposals and grant councils to be given the funding and powers to be able to enter homes or premises where a child is being home-schooled and speak to them.
