Councils axe funding for Traveller community pupils

1 min read Education Legal
More than a third of councils have scrapped or slashed funding to support pupils from Traveller communities.

The research was uncovered through Freedom of Information Act enquiries by The Independent and will be presented in a report to the UN committee on the elimination of racial discrimination by the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain (ITMB).

Out of the 152 local authorities in England 127 supplied data, of which 24 had scrapped their Traveller education support team and 34 had cut staff working with Traveller pupils. Twenty said funding in this area was either under review, undecided or was subject to restructuring.

The ITMB argues that the cuts are unfair as Traveller community children already have some of the poorest grades and outcomes compared with their peers.
