The aim of the review is to evaluate how successful it is in engaging with young people and to give councillors a greater understanding of its work.
Other areas being looked at will be the recruitment and retention of detached youth workers and how well the service links up with local charities.
Details of the review were presented to members of the council's children services scrutiny forum when they met yesterday (10 September).
As part of the review councillors will accompany detached youth workers to see the work they carry out first hand.
A draft final report is expected to be published next March and a final report is expected to be put before the council's cabinet next May.
