The LGA said councils are grappling with funding pressures at a time when referrals are expected to rise due to pent up demand left over from a fall during the pandemic lockdown.
Last week, official figures showed referrals to children's social care services fell 18 per cent between April and June compared to the same period in each of the previous three years. The number of children taken into care in the first three months of 2020/21 also fell by around a third compared to previous years.
The Children’s Society said it expects referrals to children’s services to rise in the coming weeks, with schools playing a pivotal role in spotting neglect and abuse.
