Huntingdonshire District Council has blocked plans for a new children's home in the village of Old Weston, citing “a lack of infrastructure" and "safeguarding issues for residents” as key reasons behind its decision.

Esland North Limited applied to convert a five-bedroom property in the rural village into a children's home for young people aged eight to 18. The coalition-led council blocked plans for this after receiving 26 objections from members of the public.

Esland North Limited is operated under Esland which offers care, education and therapeutic support to children through 57 homes in Yorkshire and Kent.

Lack of nearby facilities such as schools, doctors, shops, public transport and street lighting as well as flooding and draining issues on the site were cited as issues in some of the objections. A lack of privacy, noise disturbance and increased safeguarding concerns for residents were also raised.
