One in three parents ‘struggling with fallout of lockdown’

A new YouGov survey of 2,000 parents carried out by Action for Children highlights the devastating impact of Covid-19 on the wellbeing of families.

Over a third of parents (36 per cent) say that their children are feeling isolated and lonely, with millions also reported as anxious, or unable to sleep.

A further four in ten parents (43 per cent) said the impact of the pandemic of their child had left them feeling anxious and more than one in three (33 per cent) admitting to being out of their depth when it came to supporting their children during the lockdown.

Campaign highlights rights of child prisoners

A new campaign by the Howard League for Penal Reform is educating child prisoners about their rights during the Covid-19 crisis.

A leaflet sent to all children in young offender institutions, secure training centres and secure children’s homes details young people’s rights to education, healthcare, exercise, legal advice and contact with friends and family.

It also advises children what to do if they think their rights are being ignored.

Exam-year students miss out on learning

Almost half of students due to take exams this year received no school work from teachers during lockdown, a new report shows.

A survey by the National Foundation for Educational Research of more than 4,000 parents shows that almost half of pupils in years 11 and 13 received no online lessons.

It also shows that most pupils spent less than three hours per day on remote learning activities.

ADCS calls on government to tackle inequality post-lockdown

The Association of Directors of Children’s Services has called on the government to use lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic to tackle inequality.

A new report ‘Building a country that works for all children post Covid-19’ highlights the growing disadvantage gap exacerbated by the pandemic and calls for a “visible” cross-party strategy to support those worst affected.
