Consultation set for Isle of Wight youth funding cuts

1 min read Youth Work
Councillors have given the go-ahead to a major consultation into the future funding of the Isle of Wight youth services.

The authority is proposing to cut funding for youth services by up to a third in a shake-up of the provision.

The council's cabinet agreed that the public should be consulted about the reorganisation of the youth service, which councillors hope will improve flexibility and outcomes for children and young people.

One of the possibilities being explored is more school buildings being used for the provision of youth services, following a restructuring of the schools in the area that is currently underway.

Last month CYP Now reported that the council currently spends £71 per young person but it is looking to bring spending down to about £52, which it claims is comparable with other authorities of a similar size.

Council leader David Pugh said that many of the islands youth centres were in need of modernisation and the council's budget should be used to provide a range of activities to attract more young people.
