Conservative conference: Gove urges teaching unions to put children's interests above 'ideology'

1 min read Education
Education secretary Michael Gove has begged teachers not to take industrial action because of the damage it causes families in his address to the Conservative Party conference.

Gove said strikes organised by teaching unions over changes to teachers’ pay were based on “wasted militant logic”.

“There is nothing child-friendly about industrial action,” he said of unions' assertions that the strikes were not going to overly impinge on children.

“Children lose a day of education, parents have to scrabble to pay more for expensive childcare and the prestige of the teaching profession, which we all want to see reinforced and built up, takes a knock.

“I have a simple message for the leaders of the militant teaching unions: please, please, please don’t put your ideology before our children’s interests.”

Gove did not make any policy announcements during his speech and used the stage to congratulate ministers at the Department for Education.
