Conference tackles lack of men in childcare

Childcare minister Elizabeth Truss is among those set to join what organisers say is the first event of its kind.

The half-day conference, organised by the London Early Years Foundation, will examine why so few men work in early years and what can be done to encourage them to enter the field.

Gary Simpson, lead for quality learning and development at the foundation, said it was important for men working in the sector to act as examples to other men.

“If men in childcare are to be the role models for children, then they also need to take a lead in the sector to encourage more men to work in childcare,” said Simpson.

“They must also remind the world that men in childcare come to it because they want to support children’s learning, add value to the sector, and lead and develop research to continue to improve what happens for children and families way into the future.”

Truss is set to join a panel of early years experts at the event, who will address questions such as why childcare is stereotypically seen as “women’s work”.

The conference follows the foundation's launch of the London Network for Men in Childcare last November.

Research published by the foundation that same month found that 51 per cent of nursery workers believe men are discouraged from pursuing a career working in childcare because of “society’s attitude”.

The event, which is being run by Capita Conferences, will be held on 27 June in central London and is aimed at all early years professionals.
