Commissioner Maggie Atkinson urges government to stop deportation of children to EU countries

2 mins read Social Care Asylum
Children's commissioner for England Maggie Atkinson has called on the government to review its policy of deporting asylum-seeking children to the first European country they entered, in an attempt to avoid handling cases in the UK.

Atkinson made the call as she launched the report Landing in Kent, which praised provision at the Millbank Reception and Assessment Centre. The report also examined the experiences of the boys at the centre and their journeys to England.

Addressing delegates at a conference hosted by the Refugee Council, Atkinson said the government must now review its plans to send 16- and 17-year-old Afghans back to Kabul and also the EU-wide policy of returning children to the EU country where they were first fingerprinted.

She also urged the UK Border Agency (UKBA) to ensure there is appropriate adult support during immigration interviews with children.
