Commission to assess the cost and availability of childcare

The government has launched a commission into the affordability and availability of childcare.

Led by children’s minister Sarah Teather and work and pensions minister Maria Miller, the commission will look, in the first instance, at what can be done to ensure more affordable childcare for parents of school-age children through out-of-school clubs.

It will also be examining how regulation of the sector, including childminding, can be simplified.

Teather said that by making the commission a joint venture between the Department for Education and the Department for Work and Pensions, the government’s work on the free entitlement to childcare and universal credit and tax credits will be brought closer together.

Speaking at the Early Years 2012 conference in London, Teather said: “The main focus is about looking at what we can do, particularly for school-age children in the first instance, because we know that is a particular concern for parents at the moment.
