Coalition sets out plans for pupil premium and giving schools more power

Plans to introduce a pupil premium for disadvantaged pupils and free colleges from state control have been rubberstamped in the coalition's programme for government.

Setting out the government's stall for education and post-16 learning, the document commits to pledges set out in the Conservative Party manifesto, including the intention to abolish many of the further education quangos.

The Conservative plans for free schools that give parents, teachers, charities and local communities the chance to set up new schools, and a Teach Now programme for people wishing to switch careers into teaching have also been agreed upon.
